Two brothers and a friend find $4 million in a crashed plane deep in a snowy forest, and devise a scheme to keep the money. Soon, however, greed, suspicion and circumstance start to unravel
their carefully constructed plans.
Scott B Smith’s devastating first novel was a masterpiece of moral ambiguity and middleclass horror, asking difficult questions about greed, singlemindedness and how far a “good” man will go for his family.
In the screen version, Evil Dead and Spiderman helmer Sam Raimi elegantly articulates the isolation of the characters. And although the callous, relentless brutality of the novel is diluted somewhat by over-complication and hand-wringing, this is nevertheless a stunning thriller.
