Neurotic, romantic comedian Alvy Singer (Allen) looks back at his life in an attempt to make sense of his failed relationship with Annie Hall (Diane Keaton).

Despite a near-relentless barrage of startling cinematic trickery and hysterical one-liners – “In the event of war, I’m a hostage” – it transcends his earlier, more farcical films by lacing the hilarity with savage self-criticism and an almost unbearable sense of loss.
