Arsenic and Old Lace - Review

Bolster yourself before the most depressing day of the year – officially tomorrow – by revisiting this hilariously black-hearted comedy about precarious mental health.

Cary Grant stars as Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic and famous opponent of marriage who discovers on his wedding day that his two sweet elderly aunts have been murdering old men, and that insanity runs (“It practically gallops”) in his family.

Mortimer’s growing obsession with his own madness and farcical attempts to remain sane as the crisis spirals ridiculously out of control from beneath him are sublimely comic and beautifully performed, and are guaranteed to brighten up even the darkest of days.
